Winch Servicing Essentials

Winches need servicing to prolong its life and to ensure all is in effective working order. A general rule of thumb for a 1 or 2 speed Harken Winch, stick a finger into the socket and twist. A well maintained winch should turn freely when you twist in either direction, if there is resistance this indicates it is time your winch had a service.

A service includes:

Wipe down of all turning and grinding components to get rid of dirt, salt, and grime built up inside.

Re-grease of shafts and gears will allow freer movement and less resistance when winch is being used under load.

Lubricate pawls and springs with pawl oil as these components face the highest amount of friction. Inspect the profile of your pawls, they are prone to wear and will need replacing if the teeth are dull. Worn pawls will not allow your winch to grip and your sheets will slip even when under tension.

Fosters have curated a hassle free Winch Service Kit small enough for on the go servicing.

That's not all though. At Harken we pride ourselves on the integrity, durability and reliability of our products and we wouldn't leave you without adequate support. Here are our care instructions specific to harken winches.
